Matthias Heilbronn first witnessed Larry Levan at the legendary Paradise Garage back in ’86. Three years later, in ’89, he moved from Germany to New York to pursue his love for the music that changed his life. He learned engineering, programming and editing at Axis Studios, with François K. as his mentor, and Frankie Knuckles as his roommate. Soon, he had the privilege to meet and work with Larry Levan and Tom Moulton. He became one of New York’s most in demand editors and programmers, working with producers Danny Tenaglia, Todd Terry, Tommy Musto, C&C Music Factory and François K. Eventually, it was Tommy Musto who released Matthias’ first record.
In 1994, Matthias started writing and producing some of the biggest Garage tracks of the time under Deep Zone Productions, with his partner Mike Delgado. Together, they wrote and produced Carolyn Harding’s “ I Am What I Am”, “It’s Gonna Be Alright” feat. vocals by Ceybil Jeffries, “Music Takes Me Higher” by Lift and “Live in Unity” by Dangerous Minds. They also remixed for artists, such as Soul II Soul, Randy Crawford and Crystal Waters. In 1997, Matthias began working with his long time friend Mousse T., producing and remixing for Peppermint Jam Productions. His remixes of artists Blueboy, Backstreet Boys, Paid & Live, Rebekah Ryan and Boom gave him recognition on the European dance charts.
The following year, Matthias crafted II Deep Productions and furthered his reputation as one of house music’s most prolific producers. Since that time he’s continued to work under the II Deep Productions moniker remixing and producing unforgettable house anthems. His productions and remixes have earned a reputation of quality and pure class. Matthias’ productions and remixes can be found on quality independent labels such as Wave Music, Chez Music, King Street/Nitegrooves, Masters at Work at Distance Music. His unmistakable sound is also in demand with major labels and his remixes for artists such as Anastacia, Everything But The Girl, Kina and Finley Quaye have hit the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. His first compilation, “Selections by Matthias “Matty” Heilbronn” was released in 2000 on NCP Productions, and earned international praise. Throughout the years, Matthias has worked very closely with his friend, Todd Terry, co-remixing tracks by artists such as, Moloko, Afro Mudusa, James Ingram, Martha Wash, and Cher and collaborating on Todd’s debut D&B album “Resolutions”.
Matthias devotes a great deal of his time to working in the studio; however, his production work has not prevented him from DJing, which is how his love for music initially developed. Matthias’ DJ appearances take him around the globe… from Portugal, England, Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Ibiza, Japan, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Tahiti, Copenhagen, across the US, and back to the city that has been his home since 1989, New York. He is forever grateful to all the club-goers, promoters, venues and festivals around the world that have invited him to play and allowed him to express his feelings through music, on a personal level.
Although renowned amongst the heads for his garage projects, his DJ sets reveal a much broader cross-section of influences. 7 Magazine (UK) describes his set at Turnmills (11/01) : “Matt Heilbronn’s spellbindingly eclectic set includes a sublimely reworked ‘Sexual Healing’ in his panoramic journey across often arbitrary musical genres, creating a sense of New York, both past and present”. His unique style earned him a spot on DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs In The World where they described him as “one of the true unsung heroes of house music”, and in DJ Magazine’s Top 10 Covermount CDs of the Decade, Matthias earned the #1 position of the decade for compiling and mixing his seminal Wave/Chez/Naked compilation.
2003 brings many new and exciting endeavors for Matthias. In January, he launched his new weekly party, “Love, from NYC” at one of the best venues in NYC, ARC (formally Vinyl), where he and fellow selector, DJ Tedd Patterson, serve an eclectic mix of everything from Tech-House to Classics every Sunday afternoon from 5PM-12AM. He also has recently initiated work on his debut album project, collaborating with the many talented musicians that he has worked with throughout the past decade. The album will be titled “The Soulflower Project” and will be released on Distance Music (France) in 2003. Next, Matthias has two new original productions, “Nature Boy” and “That Girl” that are now available on King Street and Wave Music, respectively, and both receiving great reviews, and radio/club play. Finally he’s recently completed four new incredible remixes that are scheduled for release in the first half of 2003: “Rocksteady” by Remy Shand (Mowtown), “Black Betty” by Tom Jones, “Dance to the Music” by Bootsy Collins and “Her Song” by MKL vs. Soy SOS. Matthias will also continue to DJ around the globe spreading his unique, signature soulful vibe!
