About Cesaria Evora...
Cize, as her friends call her, was born on August 27, 1941 in Mindelo , Cape Verde. Her lifelong dream of becoming a singer was not fulfilled until the age of 47. In 1988, a young Frenchman offered her to come to Paris and record an album. Her first album La Diva aux Pieds Nus was successful among the Cape Verdean community and led to live performances and a second album.
It was Miss Perfumado, however, that gave her international exposure and sold over 200,000 copies. French press raved about this new release, comparing Cesaria’s smooth voice to Billie Holiday’s and detailed what would soon be part of the legend... her immoderate love for cognac and tobacco, and her life on those forgotten islands.
In 1995, the album Cesaria was released in over twenty countries including the States (where it sold over 200,000 copies). The album was nominated for a Grammy Award. Her next album, Cabo Verde featured the wonderful "Sangue de Beirona" which was released by Wave Music in 1998 and remixed by Joe Claussell and François K .
Now , Wave Music, has licensed the enchanting “Carnaval de São Vicente” from Cesaria Evora’s most recent album, Café Atlantico, and once again, presents it with remixes by Joaquin ‘Joe’ Claussell and François K.
