Michael Trommer is a Toronto based producer and visual artist who has recorded for such top electronic music labels as Transmat, Interchill, Nice'N'Smooth, Dragonfly, Ultra-Vista, Instinct, Impact, Liquid Sound Design and Dakini, both under his own name as well as aliases such as sans soleil, Hydraulic and Manitou2.
Always forward thinking, Michael also creates gallery-based audio installation work. 2005 saw him creating a site-specific sound installation for Australia’s ‘Liquid Architecture’ exhibition. Another of his recent works was a net-based audio-manipulation project which was part of the ‘from 0 to 1 and back again’ exhibition at Kunsthalle Schirn in Frankfurt, becoming the subject of many radio specials on both Deutsche Welle and Hessischer Rundfunk. His work was recently nominated for the Prix Italia for experimental music. His field-recording based material has been featured on London’s Resonance FM, www.insine.net, and www.stasisfield.com.
As a live show, sans soleil was featured at the 2003 Movement Festival (a.k.a.DEMF) in support of Michael's full-length album on Detroit's legendary Transmat label.
2005 promises to be a busy year release-wise, with 12-inches appearing on Wave Music and DoRight (Toronto). Net-label www.phoniq.net will also feature a double-release of recent sans soleil live sets. In 2006, Michael will be creating an audio installation at the State Gallery in St. Petersburg, Russia, based on Mies van der Rohe’s Toronto Dominion Centre.
Genevieve Marentette is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter who has recently graduated from Canada’s renowned Jazz school Humber College. Having moved to school from Windsor, she has recorded with Detroit based producers such as Recloose for Carl Craig’s Planet e records, Mike ’Agent X‘ Clarke, Tony Ollivierra, Jerry James, and Theo Parrish.
In 2002, Genevieve spent a month in Paekakariki and Wellington, New Zealand recording with Matt Chicoine a.k.a. Recloose and Atlanta’s Justin Chapman of Kemetic Just for an up and coming project called ‘Te Manuhiri’ which means ‘the visitor’ in Maori.
Some recent collaboration with Theo is featured on his new release ‘The Rotating Assembly’. Genevieve's signature vocals can be heard on the three songs: ‘Ascension’, ‘The Mess I Made’, and ‘Split Me Open’. But her track with Theo Parrish ‘You Forgot’ on the ‘Dirt Rhodes’ LP is considered a Detroit classic.
In Toronto, Genevieve has been honing her Jazz chops, studying Latin and Brazilian music practicing, performing and recording with a few locals.
Genevieve was the featured vocalist for six ‘Quadrasonic’ events in 2004, Toronto’s most successful Latin-house series. In Toronto she has collaborated with Moonstar (Kevin Moon), Middlefield and Sans Soleil (Michael Trommer).
Genevieve Marentette and Michael Trommer were introduced by Transmat and the Movement Festival’s Derrick Ortencio, who wanted to see them work together. In May of 2004, sans soleil’s first full-length album on Transmat was released, which features the track ‘office jesus’, their first collaboration. This so-far Japanese-only release is currently in Tower Record Tokyo’s club/electronic top 10, and is scheduled for a European and North American release in the near future.
