Sbs Sra 2.1 - Home Hifi Speaker System
I started to develop and offer custom Home hifi speakers, using TAD products for clients requesting systems for their homes. From time to time i do get calls for this application so i decided to offer home hifi speakers.
I am offering the SRA 2.1 speaker system with CD or Wood horns, & in a variety of finishes, natural wood, a variety of stained wood choices, or painted white or black, all at the clients request. In this situation with these speakers, my clients wanted to have these cabinets in black.
The SRA 2.1 is to be used biamped, as a 2 way fullrange speaker system from 20 to 20. They can be used with subs in a 3 way configuration aswell, with the SBS SRA 118SW - TAD1801 loaded in a TRI Amped configuration. The SRA 2.1`s are designed with 2 TAD 1603 mid bass drivers and 1 TAD 2001 compression driver.
I will post the final pics with the grills and installed soon
Here is the thread of the 1st installment of this system for my client

can you tell us about the D'Appolito Configuration you appear to be using?
and why you decided to use this alignment?
here's some background reading for those that wish to do so...
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread/t-35955.html
lots of discussion can be found searching "D'Appolito" or "MTM alignment"...

Shorty, are the boxes being constructed the same ones as the painted ones?
the first ones look like the baffle is non-removable, but the baffle looks different in the next pictures?
*edit*
nevermind, looks like some trim to mount the grilles?

design for its coverage pattern and how i wanted it to sound in a sitting or standing situation, i felt this way was the best way to go & I happen to like this way of a box design

so you believe the "sweet spot" to be larger with the MTM type of design?
how did you figure out the driver spacing to use between the mids/tweeters?
i've read that, generally speaking, the closer the better...
how does increasing the driver spacing effect the design?

depends on the dispersion of your horn, the sweet spot can be larger depending on what horn you use

the same boxes, i loaded the unpainted box so it can visually be seen so you have a idea what it looks like in natural wood for clients that want this look, then painted for the same reason.
Yes that is a grill mount i am using, i did not want to go with the grill over the entire speaker but only to cover the 15s, just so it looks different

I am trying to offer sound in many applications to be a well rounded company, eventually this system will turn into a SBS home theatre system.
I will design a center speaker & rear surrounds in the future next. I am excited to hear these in his home with Krell on the 15s and the Thrive Audio Syla amp on the mid compresion drivers.
We are planning on possibly building mono block Thrive Amps convection cooled for the SBS SRA 118SW, currently they are being driven by a Thrive Audio Nyla but he wants to have no fans in his system, so we are working on a few solutions for him because it is a home install not a club.
We have built these Mono blocks for a client and they are about 2800 watts per block,so this is most likely where we will go next with this system, then Thrive amps for the rear surround SBS speakers and Krell for the center since the Kreal KAV 1500 is a 5 ch amp to run the SBS Center speakr

well done shorty, I've always wanted to extend my work into HiFi but besides the occasional customised SL1200 I never seem to get the time!
I do seem to be the "all things audio" adviser to a lot of the club owners I do work for as I'm sure you and a lot of people on this forum do as well. I have always had to use cabinets I could get off the shelf but compact HiFi cabinets (and they all seem to be compact) just don't do the job when the client has a console and a 4am habit of playing records with friends.

system pics, Enjoy.
I have to say the system sounds amazing, alot of room resonance issues with the old tops are gone now, no longer a problem, the system is seamless, very clean, fast and sounds amazing.
No matter if you stand up or sit down the image does not fall off at all. it sounds the same everywhere.
This was exactly what i wanted this system to do, when i designed it for my client, because he does entertain friends and when they are standin up moving around i did not want the sound to fall off & sound muffled, This is why i went with this set up from the beginning for my client.
Jazz, clasical, dance, & movies it all sounds Great and my client is thrilled with his purchase.Cant wait to try the Thrive Iona Amp on his TAD 15s next week. Next is a SBS Center Ch Speaker system

I'm the lucky guy who owns this system, and I can't say enough good things. I mean really. I was expecting this to sound great and make dance music come alive. Which it does. I was not expecting it to bring acoustic music from Jazz, to Classical, to Rock, to Vocal Soloists etc. to life the way it does. I have been to hundreds of auditions in countless audiophile stores ... You know the part where they ask you to close your eyes and see if you can feel the band in front of you? Well, before I needed some imagination. Here, I keep opening my eyes 'cause I swear I feel Mick Jagger breathing on me. The power is incredible too ... I can play this system loud enough to get evicted 3x over, and it just keeps going without distortion. Wow! I can't say enough good things about this system. As soon as we get that fan noise taken care of on the Nyla, we are golden. Thanks Shorty!!!! You are the bomb!!!!

Hey Shorty
Are both woofers in the top box wired in parallel?
How do you sort out phasing and comb filtering issues due to the space between the drivers?
