Meters make sense in clubs where the dj might need a bit of a visual reminder where the levels actually are after a few drinks, etc and time playing have numbed the ears a bit.

It's also handy to have a proper peak meter right above the mixer for checking the levels going to the soundcard if you're recording a set. That way the DJ doesn't have to look over at the laptop to check it's not clipping.

At the end of the day, what gear you buy for your setup is each individual's decision based on your own perceived needs/wants and on what you can afford - you pays yer money and you makes yer choices, if you know what I mean!

Nice JBLs.

I like those modular boxes you've built the whole thing from. Where did you get them? Or did you make them?

Hi mate!

They're Century L100s. Not of sure the exact year but think around mid to late 70s.

Matt

Mattl, that looks awesome! Love the modular design. I second Mister Harrison's request: did you make them or buy them? They look great.

Love the JBL L100 Century, I've got their little brothers, the L36 Decade. Jaysoul, the L100 is a real classic. The studio monitor versions 4310, 4311, and 4312 are similarly classic boxes.
(ps. digging your Boogie mix right now)

Thanks for the comments.

They boxes were made for me by a local joiner who a friend knows. We found a box for sale that came in a flat pack and he used that as a template. They're made from thick mdf and are routed, glued and pinned together. He made well over a hundred of them which a few of us have used in a similar way.

Getting them level was quite a job though as the floor is not true so there's a bit of packing underneath the bottom row.

Thanks Adam, no it's not circuit bent yet. Got it as a X-mass present from mate and been meaning to bend it but haven't really had time to look into it yet.
You got any good pages on bends for it?
Sad but I had about as much fun with it as his younger kids did hahah

the other side of the room is a bit more high-tech lol

Also I just cooped a Zoom 1202 for like 30 quid after playing my friends...I was surprized how nice it sounds for such a cheap unit.

Here's one: http://www.punksynth.com/2010/07/30/...eak-and-spell/

I did mine years ago, when I was in a building frenzy mode lol. It's a cool toy for production. There are a lot on sale on ebay usually and some other weird bends as well. Definitely a cult underground these days...

Wicked man, just what I was looking for! So many mods for these..this looks the ticket.

I was round my mates the other day and it's funny..all this nice gear he has like a Doepfer modular system and what am I fascinated by?! A Casio VL-1 while he was bustin out bass lines on the SH-101 hahah

Ashamed to say but I have spent very little time in the studio since doing it...I did poke about in the Speak+Spell and found the pitch point where he almost time stretches what he says if you touch two certain points together and sampled a few words which I stuck over some raw 808
http://www.sendspace.com/file/qyuyjx
Mainly trying to get used to the new monitors and desk..
And more housey' stuff http://www.sendspace.com/file/6gjt3v

I still need to get a few things wired up..if any one has a 40/50m reel of vandamme cable I would be interested.

Yea I havent really played with mine in a while, been wanting to base a track on it. I recently picked up my favorite classic synth, a Supernova II keyboard, which took me months to hunt down online, that's been my favorite toy as of late but back to the Speak n Spell soon
