I'm going through a strange phase mate but I just haven't been feeling DJ'ing or that mixer lately.. To be honest not had much time for music

Also I really wanted Justin to mod the LE as the stock sound I don't like and it's so noisy (hiss and hum) but don't have the cash... so long story short I thought f*ck it sell it as I hardly mix now, get something cheaper but improve on my hi-fi and phono pre-amp.

Funny enough im trying to get some mods done too (or a new rotary), for the EXACT same reason

One thing that annoys me about the UREI (Probably the only thing bar the noise actually) is the cueing system, do you find thats a pain in the arse M?

Actually that's one thing I love about it lol Probs the feature every one else hates other than the balance pots hahah
I like it, it's hardcore and raw like sushi

On the mods side of things, Justin told me the LE is capable of wonderful things. The noise I guess would be rectified with the external PSU couple that with tweaks inside and I'm sure he could make it sound lovely.

I'm modding my LE right now. (thanks man_traic for sending me the Service Manual).

I've already eliminated the Pan knobs and the EQ. I'm also going to eliminate the FX loop which gets rid of a few opamps.

I'm replacing all the caps with Nichicon Muse type, and "poogeing" them with polypropylene caps in parallel. (Google "capacitor bypass polypropylene"). I'm not sure if it's baloney but I'm giving it a shot.

I'm swapping the opamps (I'll start a thread on this once this choice is settled.)

Odd that you're having noise issues. My unit is extremely quiet, as in "turn everything up to 10 and don't hear anything out of Yamaha NS-10 monitors" quiet.) In fact this mixer is much, much quieter than a vintage 1620 or Bozak.

For regular use I'll take a new mixer over a vintage anytime. But of course the LE doesn't have the sweet, sweet sound of those lush vintage identical bottom-of-the-line opamps, right?

Somehow I don't believe that, your bound to have some noise especially on the phono channels when you turn those up.
On the Urei you didn't need anything cranked up as soon as you plugged it in to a power amp you could hear it's hiss compared to other more modern components which were quiet, the line channels were pretty quiet though.
Half of this is down to the crappy PSU on them

Actually I've brought a vintage Bozak from 76 just cos it wasn't badly priced lol

NS-10's and 1620 LE don't the midrange and that treble kill you coming out from that combination?

You're right...phono noise would be audible...my phono preamps are gone from 1&2. I'm only considering self-noise of the mixer/amp chain when I say that.

It's really easy to make it sound jarring, but on the other hand practicing on it has a "medicine ball effect".

(Eventually I'm building a mixer with a passive summing stage and a dual triode tube for makeup gain, but that's after I clone myself.)

Hi Vinyl - are you in the UK? If so, are you using a separate power supply (like the Isonoe) for your Bozak? I thought about hunting down a Bozak but wasn't sure if they were 120v only, so would need to get it converted. Out of interest, did you manage to find one in the UK or import? Very jealous!

Yea I'm UK, not using a separate PSU.
Bozak's could be supplied with a 240v transformer at request when they were made.
Mine is from USA, I haven't received it yet but I'll use it with a step down converter as I don't have the cash to go with the Isonoe PSU.

The LRPS will greatly improve the mixers performance though

Thanks, Vinyl. I had thought about step downs but wasn't sure if they added any noise. A quick search would suggest not really. I've got an LE at the moment and it is really noisy.

Enjoy your Bozak when it arrives!

Oki,
i have an original Urei, and it's a bit noisy/hashy too....
when nothing is playing, you really notice it...

but when in a mix session, it's not really an issue...

methinks it's at least partly attributable to "IC Hiss" --
it's been talked before on these pages...

I read somewhere the LE was somehow nosier than the original (without modifications)

I think a lot of the hiss and hum is attributed to it's crude PSU as well as the IC's

I agree the noise isn't much of a issue when mixing but I'm not playing a lot of dance music lately and the hiss really gets in the way even when I was using really quiet external phono pre-amps with the LE
The hiss and the LE's nasty shouty mid range was ruining my listening pleasure pretty much with anything you were putting in to it.

The original 1620 sounds better than the LE

I was offered a original 1620 for a good price but decided on the Bozak as I never tried one, I'll post my thoughts on it once I get it
