Console

Well, it has been a long time coming. I've wanted a new console for a while now having seen some inspirational images on these pages! Now I have the house... my new 'music room' is almost finished being decorated so I'm almost there!

I asked my retired neighbour Ken, who I knew had good carpentry skills, if he would be interested in building me a new DJ console. He jumped at the opportunity and threw himself into it with full steam. Ken moved all of his tools down into my cellar and got to work. I supplied the design and some drawings and Ken took care of things! (shout out to DJ Teji who helped by sending over some close up pictures of his console)

The basic construction is now finished and I am extremely pleased with the results - Ken has played a blinder! A living legend. I intend on painting it now and adding a few finishing touches.

Can't wait to get using it.

Looking sharp, Jaysoul! Really top notch. You're going to have a lot of long, enjoyable hours playing on that console.

Are you going to be able to expand your rack spaces in the future? I see you've only given yourself one 6 or 7RU cut-out for the mixer, iso, etc. Even if you don't have more gear now, you may well get more in the future. How easy will it be to make additional cut-outs once that front panel is attached?

Congrats!

Yes very nice! I'm with Lime Twig in now's the time to maybe expand that mixer cutout. Maybe you're planning side-by-side cutouts?

Awesome console Jay

I am well chuffed today, I didn't expect to buy anything new but I got a text and I couldn't resist at the price..I was going to buy a SH-101 but this got in the way (Thanks Mark! lol)
I now want another set of HR-624's for the DJ room as these will go in the studio replacing the Fostex PM-1 mk2's

I love these things!

Thanks for the comments guys.

The cut out for the mixer is currently just big enough to fit my Urei and E&S isolator. I have no immediate plans to add any more equipment so this should be fine for now. It should be easy enough to cut extra spaces in the future if needed without having to actually take the thing apart.

Out of curiosity... what other rack mounted equipment do you think would be of benefit!?

Could someone explain this in basic terms for me!? Does it basically give you a much cleaner, louder sound with less background 'noise / interferance' ?

And also how does the Urei connects to this device?

I prefer to use my ears rather than rely on a meter especially at Dorrough prices!

Yeah I think the Dorroughs is 2U.
I have a Logitek Bright VU which is 1U, like this one but with just one set of meters:

The Wohler ones are 1U as well:

Seems a bit pointless spending all that money on flashy lights and pointless racks in the console if it's just for your own home use..to me they just look ugly but then I have never been a big fan of big gold chains or baller ltd edition 1210's lol
These expensive meeter have their use in studio's and big club installs but unless you just want to show off what's the point?
I could think of much better things to spend the money on...sometimes less is more

Meters make sense in clubs where the dj might need a bit of a visual reminder where the levels actually are after a few drinks, etc and time playing have numbed the ears a bit.

It's also handy to have a proper peak meter right above the mixer for checking the levels going to the soundcard if you're recording a set. That way the DJ doesn't have to look over at the laptop to check it's not clipping.

At the end of the day, what gear you buy for your setup is each individual's decision based on your own perceived needs/wants and on what you can afford - you pays yer money and you makes yer choices, if you know what I mean!

Nice JBLs.

I like those modular boxes you've built the whole thing from. Where did you get them? Or did you make them?
