It looks like it's cue on/off.

I get the feeling it's a modified Bozak by looking at it. If it's not, it's at least heavily inspired by Bozak.

FWIR(ead) on Tourism --

it came from an old FL club, Salvation on the Beach (it's now an Office Max), custom made mixer.

OK, I know what it is now!

Thats a customized urei, my freind Leslie Small who did the sound for Salvation got that mixer from someone he knew. The guy gutted the urei, and did all discrete circuitry, and point to point wiring. He always told me this mixer sounded amazing!

THAT is a super hot rodded urei!

did you ever see pics of the guts?

It would be neat to see the work, and get a breakdown of the added functionality....

Does it say Marshak on the panel?

I found this by Michael S Marshak. I don't know if it's his application for a patent or what but it does mention the Bozak.

It started life as a urei, but became much more, its the bodybuilder version of the urei.

this is probably a stupid question...

but what's the point of the middle row of pots? isn't that just to control L/R balance? wouldn't you always want to keep that centered? when would you not?

also, Scott...can you explain discrete circuitry and point to point wiring, and why it's superior?
i'm guessing discrete means it's mono??? so that would require 2 pots per input...but then wouldn't that make the middle row of L/R Balance pots redundant?

Discrete means they used transistors, resistors, and capacitors to build out the circuits, instead of IC chips. The Bozak is all discrete circuitry, and discrete sounds better than chips. Its also more expensive to manufacture this way.

Point to point wiring is the old way, when they didnt have printed circuit boards, and wired the compeonents together. The small traces on a circuit board are ok, but a wire is usually better when it comes to the best signal transfer, and current carrying capability. More copper ensures better signal transfer and is more expensive to do.

Supposedly, this was a one off mixer designed to be the best of its kind!

sometimes you come across records that are "uneven"
IE the left channel may be a little (or alot) hotter than the right....

or if you wnated to bring a track in from the left or right side of the room.... I have a couple of train and other sound effect records...

it is fun to make it seem that a train is plowing through your room.... comes in on the left, leaves to the right....

almost like your room is the train tunnel....

why patent a one off that virtually no one would ever get a chance to really see?

It looks like it took almost two years to complete the patent process...

Thats a question I dont have an answer for!

Could be it was made, and then was considered to expensive to produce.

In the time this mixer was made, many club owners balked at $1100 for a new Urei 1620.

If this mixer was being made now, with premium parts, and pots, what would it cost to buy? I already know what a V6 cost when A & H were making that!

As much as people say they want this and that, there isnt a big enough market for $3000+ nightclub mixers.

And, something like this is expensive to build, especially when you arent a giant audio company, that can buy enough parts to get a good enough price.

Who knows?

Short answer - It would have been an infringement if an audio company took a peek inside this mixer and replicated the protected technology. So it's main purpose is to make sure large companies don't snatch up the design.

Lil longer-
The patent is a utility patent and its being polared against the Bozak. Because the similar Bozak is preexisting and patented , it's design is considered "prior art" A utility patent is issued based how a invention performs it's duty. You must prove your invention against all prior art (the Bozak and others on record). IOW - you must show that you have a substantially different invention from the Bozak and make claim only to what is unique about your invented device. The best way to do this is to provided a working prototype to show the execution of the invented design. A wire schematic is usually not sufficient because it may only work in theory. The patent's protection last 20 years from the date of the initial application. So one could actually build this mixer without royalties or permission.
