But would they then operate as a regular direct drive ?

The quartz makes the motor operation very rigid ( locks the speed ) when you remove the quartz you can thumb the platter w/o that much pitch bend. W/ quartz on, the platter should not be slowed or sped up because it will overcompensate in the opposite direction.

The center click just locks true 33.333 or 45 respectively.

It does make the slider operate smoothly but don't think it affects the operation...

I ask because I want to be able to thumb the platter when I play classics but not when I play current trax...
