Foam might help you control the sound in YOUR room, in terms of mid and high...

your post says vinyl to digital, and i mean i know CD are digital, but if that's your end format then you're limiting yourself abit, especially if you have a sound card capable of 24bit 96kHz...

JBL compression drivers

for $500 you could get some old JBL compression drivers in pretty good nick with decent diaphragms. I got some for $100 apeice minus diaphragms.
JBL2440 and 2441 are good, not much difference...
