Smaller basement rooms?

I've had some great times in low ceiling basement spots, and have always been surprised how good some of them sounded, despite seemingly random approaches to their sound systems.
What techniques have you guys seen work well in smaller (200 capacity) spaces with low ceilings?

The main issue with low ceilings is the immediate effect of early reflections from the ceiling, angling the mid and high frequency down towards to audience will only help so far. Hanging material from the ceiling can somewhat reduce the issue, though the best solution is absorption hung from the ceiling this will greatly reduce those early reflections from interfering.

I am in the initial stages of evaluating a new basement for my system...
I'll post additional information as things progress....

am I right in thinking that some subs need larger spaces to be effective? and would a low ceiling make central tweeter boxes ineffective?

potentially taking over a basement spot that has a low end patchwork system, but seemingly reasonably powered. bass just isn't that deep, and highs not that crisp, but without any abrasive peaks either, so rearranging what's there and doing some minor reinforcements seems like the best strategy, given a very limited initial budget and short turnaround time needed.
(plan is to do real renovations and upgrades after initial soft opening 'construction parties')

some of the folks over at GS seem to think there is room for debate on the space requirement for bass development....
