Do all speakers need sound damping material inside?
Not talking subs in sealed boxes, but tops. Is there ANY conceivable reason why you wouldn't put it in a cab or if it was already in, permanently remove it as a manufacturer? Is there any speaker computer modeling or anything where damping material is a bad idea and a design would simply not have it or would be modified it remove it from the design? Other than to cut corners, of course.

trick question?

how about some infinite baffle or open baffle implementations.....

Stuffing makes the woofers "see" a slightly larger volume than the box is.

Air under pressure produces heat and the stuffing absorbs this heat. As tiny as this heat is, this is the physical properties behind how it works.

It also reduces internal reflections which could cause the cones to become non-linear.

Some cabinets need a lot of it, others not so much.

You can imagine a speaker box as room, as with a room the box will suffer from similar issues, standing waves, resonanant peaks, reflections. Now where will those reflections bouncing around the box go? They will end up radiating back out through the cone and you can imagine the rest.

I didn't mean stuffing a woofer enclosure. I mean lining a PA speaker with damping material... like BAF or Dacron. I've never seen one without some sort of damping material lining the inside before, but two of my four speakers don't have any inside. They sound kind of strange to me, too.
