Long time lurker, finally I registered....
I'm a Belgian rotary adept and managed to score a mixer today....
Rane MP 2016a + expander like new and I only paid $830/ €625 ! :D
I never played with one but knew I wanted one bad....for a loooooong time. Unfortunately these mixer are very exotic here and was not prepared to pay full retail (€2300 & €1100 for expander, street price is €2400 for the combo).
Urei & Bozak are almost non existent so I gave up on those...
I got lucky because a guy working @ a dj store needed some quick cash and it was only me that noticed his add and acted fast (no time for other bidders).
The store he works for is a Rane dealer, so he was able to get that set for €1000 and used it only a few times, the units look like new in the box.
Still @ work atm but I guess I wont sleep much tonight :D
The friends she is going to play with:
Rodec MX 180 MK3
3 technics SL 1210
2 cdj 2000
DIY monitors (beyma CX12) & prodipe pro ribbon 8
This site is an awsome resource for rotary fans...feels like coming home :D
I will probably have a lot of questions and it feels great to have all this wisdom available
Ps. next mixer in pipeline is DJR400 (this year I hope)
Flemish or Wallonia? If Flannish: welkom mede nederlandsspreker!
Welcome to the forums, nice collection of mixers you got there, and a great deal you made on the rane.
As a fellow Rodec owner, how does the sound of the Rane compare to the 180mk3?
Welcome aboard!! Enjoy your purchase. I own an Urei 1620 LE (for Home) and the Rane MP2016 Original with the XP2016A Expander (for gigging on the road). You will have tons of fun on that rotary mixer.
Please make a mix and post it. Would love to hear your skills.
Thanks for posting....
Ok, hooked up the units when I came home and ...impressed to say the least.
I could not stop mixing, having loads of fun with the 2016 !
Still to early to jump to conclusions but I wanted one bad (for a very long time) and that brings a lot of expectations. Love on first sight atm, we'll see what tomorrow brings....
I only tested with my cdj's, disco and funk could you use some EQ-ing but the house track sounded fantastic on my humble but honest sound system.
Maybe some more background to give some insight on the way I cope with my addiction/hobby
I love buying classic vintage stuff with a twist...
Old, TOTL stuff that people forgot about, that you can snag up for cheap.
I refurbished a lot a old dj stuff that was way out of my reach when it was new but now you can buy these dirt cheap...
Pair of SL1210's
€250 for the pair and €110 in parts
Rodec mx180 mkIII
This is a great mixer in so many ways....
I went to check it out, the seller was the owner of a very big PA & lighting company and the rodec was installed in a bar that closed down after 6 years. He told me he tested it and 3 faders needed to be replaced and some knobs were missing (3). He didn't want to invest time repairing it because renters only wanted the pioneers. But he ensured that besides the faders & knobs, it was 100%.
For the price, I didn't check it and took it with me...
It needed some TLC and I decided to take it apart 100% and rebuild it again after checking every aspect & detail.
My heart skipped a beat when a blade of an iron saw fell out of the casing when removing the very damaged & non OEM cabinet screws (another warning). Those blades are conductive, so I was afraid some DIY repair was done by a butcher of some kind.
To my surprise, all the PCB's looked great and was amazed by the high quality & modular build:
So still a score...let's make this beast pretty again
Shopping list (5 new line faders / 3 output faders / replacement set knobs / 6 RCA PCB mounts / small part for on/off button / OEM screws). I was able to pick up the parts @ Rodec HQ for a wholesale price...130 !!!! total and they were fantastic (info/service/...).
Then disassembly totalis...
This is how I roll on a saturdaymorning @5.30 AM :D
Almost done...patient in recovery room:
Casing finished & on/off button reconnected...all done:
Looking & sounding like new...
Just to show that you can have some awesome sounding stuff for little money... I know that purists and audiophiles will laugh with my setup but I have almost more fun in searching, using and repairing old or second hand gear then I have in owning some nice pieces.
your links only work if you have techtools account.
thanks for the info, I will try to fix my post...
Edit: fixed the pictures
Some more stuff....
Bell Professional 5005 amp (vintage disco amp, OEM Fostex Model 600, 1984 - 200/300 watt )
Only needed to clean it and respray the top casing...offset was less then 3 mV
Rodec Disco Max (vintage disco amp, 340 watt, 1979 in mint condition)
Disassembled this one 100% + recap + pcb wash & tuning....fantastic
Some more info about rodec: http://www.rodec.com/ (check the about us page -> Since 1954 !)
1979, my magic number (year of birth)...I developed a habit of buying vintage gear from that year.
This resulted from a quest that took my a while to accomplish.
Building a TOTL Technics sound system from 1979 (max 100 euro/piece + mint + exception for CD player & speakers)
I ended up with:
SL1200 MKII (early production)
ST-8080 & ST-9038
SL-P770 + RC
B&W DM12 + DM14
Behind the SL you can see a piece of my AD audio (André Dumortier) handmade end stage...He made fantastic hifi stuff (valves / hybrid / solid state -> check 'sforzando dumortier' in google images
I'm Flemish (bedankt voor de verwelkoming ;) )
To early to compare the rane vs the 180mk3, we are moving atm so I'm improvising until my music studio is ready. Was not planing on buying anything but that price for a 2016a MP/XP combo was to good to be true...
I have a disco party this saturday, I'll try to record some audio...not shure if i'm going to use the 2016...
Welcome Johnny Drama, and thanks for the pictures in this post :-) Love to see internals, lol...
I must say I was somewhat dissapointed when I saw the internals of the Rodec. The pots are tiny and the especially the faders look like shortbodied alphas. But everything does seem to hold up just fine. Just wish they had an external power supply
Hey Johnny, Nice Poker chip sets you got there, lol
Time goes fast...but here is an update :)
We moved a few months ago and our baby boy was born end of April (the second one is a lot more hassle). There is always work to do when moving into a new house, so I had other priorities in the past few months...but now I'm finally building my temporary music studio. Installed now is ->
2x SL1200MK2 + 1 backup
Rodec mx180mk3 / Rane XP2016a+exp / Xone92r
+ B&W DM14 with fresh crossovers
2x RCF L15P200 (subs)
2x Beyma cx12 (mid/high)
2x Focal 7v313 (mid)
2x JBL 075 (high)
2x Prodipe Pro ribbon 8 (monitor)
Dap Vision 1600 (rcf's)
Dap Palladium 900 (beyma's)
Rodec 340 (focals)
AD vintage (discreet) stereo amp (JBL's)
For now, everything is just hooked up so a loot of tweaking and optimalisation to do.
The total cost for the whole mini sound system (booth & hifi not included) was the retail price of the dap vision amp (about 600 euro). Peanuts if you ask me, because everything is made with quality components & parts (neutrik XLR and speakon, cordial wires, penn elcom, ...). Still amazed how much nice stuff you can find for cheap/free when searching in the right places. Once the room is tuned, I can finally start testing the rodec, Xone & Rane and also record a mix.
Feel welcome to post some feedback, questions, ...
Ps. will post some pictures asap
Great set up Jhonny. The Rodec is the one that I am missing in my collection. So far I own a Vestax PMC55, a Formula Sound FF4000 and a Urei 1620le. Rodec has been the standard in the techno scene in Spain where I come from.
Jhonny, where do you live in Belgium? I live in Kleinbettingen, Luxembourg. Just 2 km away from your country. What kind of music do you play in that system?
Thanks for posting Tony...
I live in Limburg, about 2 hours drive to Luxembourg.
The rodec sound is awsome, EQ is the best of all mixers I tested and build like a tank. Let me know if you want one (depending on what you are looking for) and I can help you find a nice and cheap one. Always welcome to come and play/hang out @ my place.
I mainly play disco, soul, funk and (deep)house....prefer vinyl and a good sound :D
Ps. FF4000 schweeeeeeet ;)
I too love my Rodec, its far from perfect but its great to mix with. Everything just feels nice. IF only they made a mixer with a 12" format, 10cm high, proper crossfader, levelmeters on every channel, ditch the pan knob and have more space between the EQ, external power supply and a master isolator! that would be a dream mixer!
Jhonny, sorry for my late answer, I have been quite busy lately. Thanks for your invitation. It would be great to hang out in your place with all those toys. I can take my FS and Urei and make a Champions League line up. I travel often to Holland so I can just stop by for a while. You are also invited to my place if you ever are near by.
You can provably help me my some record shops in your country. I am old school and enjoy spending hours in shops listening to music.
