Experimental console

Been working on a new console design since I had to sell my old one (too big for the new apartment).

This is a mock up, built quick 'n' dirty out of pine to test out the feel. I haven't seen any consoles with the mixer above the decks before and I'd always thought it could work. After all, you spend most of time with your hands on the decks, not on the mixer, so why is the mixer always in front? The obvious reason is because having to reach *over* the turntables is more dangerous than reaching over a mixer. So, a lot depends on getting the placement of the mixer right.

So far, this is working great. I love the feel of having the mixer and isolator at chest height. The height of the turntables is 36" right now and the mixer is 12" above that (measured to the bottom of the turntables). 12" feels like a good amount of space: the mixer isn't too high and yet there's still room to change records without banging them against the underside of the mixer shelf.

I think I'll raise the height of the whole thing a few inches in the next version. The turntables feel a little lower than I like them. Will have to see if this makes the mixer too high, or if I'll have to decrease the 12" between TTs and mixer.

One other issue is that the headphone cord now hangs down dangerously close to the tonearms when mixing. So, I'll need to run an extension cable around the back and up underneath so the phones can plug into a jack mounted on the turntables' level.

Can't see your picture there, LT...?

Lime Twig 03-24-2014 02:35 PM

picture should be fixed now.

jnkarrik 03-24-2014 02:58 PM

It shows up for me (and looks like its been resized since this morning).

Only issue I see with the mixer above is your headphone cord dangling against a tonearm. Not sure if it would really be an issue, but you could always route an extension cable somewhere out of the way and plug the phones into that.

FYI, I have my decks at 40" and love never having to bend at the waist.

Lime Twig 03-24-2014 03:17 PM

You're right about the headphone cord issue. And yes, an extension cable is my plan.

Is 40" your turntables' platter height, or the height of what they're sitting on?

Sorry, LT, I was viewing at work and I think our firewall blocked it for some reason. Looks fine here at home.

I would suggest that you want turntables higher rather than lower, and I prefer having them all at the same height with mixer between the TTs.

Platter height.

Good. This is what I was thinking will be perfect for me. That puts the top of the platform at 36", standard counter top height.

Mr. Harrison: That's a great looking console, really like what you've done there.

I'm not a big fan of having the mixer in the middle though. That's what I've been trying to design my way out of. I like being able to work the pitch with my right hand and the volume with the left, and you can only do that half the time with a mixer-in-the-middle design.

Every design makes compromises. With the mixer in front, you have to reach for the decks. With the mixer in the middle, you have to alternate what hands you use to mix. I'm hoping having the mixer up top will be a nice solution.

What works for me (and a lot of friends agree with this) is having the platter at (approx) bellybutton height.

is this one of the earlier or later units? I believe that the later units had valves on all channels, is that correct?

it's pretty

Thatsgreat Mario.

Love the RLA power rail. Are there still a few of those around? Would love one to give my setup down here in New Zealand a touch of New York.

Facebook link?

Nice but would have liked some pull out shelves for the CDJs. Works for storage but not functional. I guess the best bits are still on top...
