Originally, in my place the tweeters were Altec 808-8A 1in drivers with tangerine phase plugs mounted on community SQ-60 fiberglass horns. These were not as efficient as the JBL 2402,s but man, they did sound the best of just about ANY pro tweeter device I have ever heard! Clean highs out to 20K....

are you talking an array of Altec 808s for a tweeter array?

very interesting....

Yeah, and I still have them, we changed to the aluminum diaphragm, and they have the " Tangerine " phase plug, we had em mounted on small Community fiberglass horns. They are sweet sounding and fast and shimmering.

Although technically it is not actually a tweeter, it is my favorite sounding tweeter device!

so they were the 808-8Bs with the tangerine plugs... very interesting....

I may have to try to get some small horns for the ones I have laying around

:D

I do like them for upper mid range duty...

I hear those ALtec 1.4" drivers are really, really sweet in the mids....

Yeah, the 808-8B,s, we changed to the aluminum diaphragm, and when they came out with the Tangerine phase plug, we got em, and installed them. Sweet, fast and extended top end. I am building two more stacks in here, they will have these tweets, and the 288,s on wood horns!

288,s had a very sweet sound. Special and unique, that was Altec, the sound of music.

:D

I know this one is resurrected, but I do have a question. Upper mid range duty. Care to elaborate. Please!

Also, did you complete this project?

upper mids = ~800Hz and above, as i was referring to it...
(seems OK? one of the "traditional" crossover points for a VOTT 2-way)

I have gone to using JBL 2440s (still waiting on getting some of the 2441 diaphragms, in the meantime JBL Ti is being used) above 800Hz; and am playing around with using different drivers to get some more HF extension -- either 075/077 or the Altec 802s (which really don't go that high, but sound real nice)....

depending on which horn i end up with on the 2440s, will probably determine what "tweeter" i end up using... I have the 2343 horns & 2328 throats, so i still need to source or fabricate some 36" lenses and 2397 horns.....

I read of some guys that have built smith horns for 075 motors.... I bet there are some 1" wood radial horns that could be used for the Altecs too....

so still trying to research, test, and find what i like best...

complete the project... LoL
